Grocery is not a harder version of retail; it is a different problem. Orders are frequent, baskets are large and low-margin, items are sold by weight, stock turns daily and delivery is promised within hours. A general ecommerce platform models none of these natively, so each one becomes a plugin, a workaround or a spreadsheet.
The clearest example is substitution. When a customer orders a brand that is out of stock, grocery operations need a picker to offer an alternative, adjust the invoice and notify the customer — a flow that simply does not exist in a platform designed for one-off parcel shipping.
General ecommerce hands the parcel to a courier and tracks a number. Grocery runs its own delivery, which means slot booking, zone-level serviceability, route ordering, a partner application and proof of delivery. Those are five separate systems to bolt on, or one platform that already has them.
Slot capacity is the piece most retrofits miss. Promising delivery between six and eight in the evening only works if the system knows how many orders that window can hold for that zone, and stops accepting them at the limit.
If you sell packaged goods with stable weights, ship nationally by courier and take a handful of orders a day, a general ecommerce platform is simpler and cheaper. The case for a purpose-built grocery platform begins when you deliver yourself, sell by weight, or need same-day slots — which is to say, when you are actually running a grocery business.
